Competition and the new year

Hello Photosoc members,

It’s now August and things are starting to heat up backstage at Photosoc HQ trying to get things sorted for Fresher’s week and the first semester of activities.
We have decided that this year, at the Fresher’s fair, we’re going to have a brand new banner for our stall, and to show off the talent of our members we’ve decided to hold a competition to allow YOU to have your photo displayed on it for years to come.

The banner will consist of four photographs from four different styles of photography: Landscape, Portrait, Wildlife/Nature and Cityscape, covering the talents of the vast majority of our members.

The details of the completion can be found below:

Start Date – Monday 2nd August
Closing Date – Monday 23rd August. This give you 3 weeks to get your entries in.

You can enter ONE photograph for EACH of the four categories.

The categories are:

  • Landscape
  • Portrait/Fashion
  • Wildlife/Nature
  • Cityscape

The photos can be from any time, so long as they were taken by you, and must be of a high resolution (i.e. no less than 6 megapixels) as we will be printing your photos with the society’s large format printer, so that we can demonstrate the quality of our equipment at the fresher’s fair.
Photos can be either Portrait or Landscape format, and can be digital or film (so long as scanned to high resolution).

You can enter the competition in TWO ways:

  1. Send your photo along with your name to photosoc.ed@googlemail.com
  2. Add a link to your photo to the Photosoc flickr group discussion thread, which I will create now. If you have not already joined the flickr group, you can do so by going to this address: http://www.flickr.com/groups/edinburgh_photosoc/

The photos from each category will be judged by the Photosoc committee and the winners will be contacted.
Remember, the winner from each category will have their photograph shown on the Photosoc banner for years to come.

P.S. Although the photos can be from any time, you should take this opportunity as an excuse to get out there and start taking some new photos.

If that’s not enough competitions for you, then why not enter City of Edinburgh Council’s “A Shot in the Park photography competition”? The competition is open until the end of September so there is plenty of time left to enter.
More details can be found here: http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet/leisure/Parks_and_recreation/CEC_a_shot_in_the_park/

Finally, if you’re in Edinburgh this Summer and are interested in taking some portraits for a website, read on.
I am a composer in the middle of setting up my website, and I would like some professional and artistic portrait shots for it.
I wonder if any of your photographers would be interested in helping me out? This could be an exciting project as I’m keen for artistic input on the shots.
The photographer will get full credit on the website!
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Luci Holland

If interested, email lilyluci@gmail.com

That’s all for now, hope you’re all having a nice summer, and looking forward to Photosoc this year, and remember to enter the competition!
