Newsletter #7 – TRIP AND COMPETITION AHEAD!

Good evening, Soccers!

We’ve got a lot of news and updates for this week’s newsletter, so please bear with me!
1. Landscape Photography – Friday 9th November
Resident landscape photographer and all-round nice guy Matthew Crisp will be returning to us on Friday to give you all some pro hints and tips on perfecting your landscape photography. Matt has an excellent cache of photos from the last few years and a lot to say on how to do it RIGHT!
Join us in our usual haunt of the Highland Room, Pleasance at 7:30pm for a stunning array of photographs and a great opportunity to get a bit of knowledge in preparation for our…
2. BIG TRIP! The Trossachs and Loch Lomond – 16th – 18th November
On the 16th November, Photosoc will be heading out to the Dreadnought Hotel in the market town of Callander for fun, friends and photos! There will be plenty of opportunity to roam the town as well as some hiking out in the woods to take in the local wildlife and scenery.
Cost of the hotel is £42pp for the weekend, including a Full English breakfast on the Saturday and Sunday mornings, woohoo! Sadly, there is no train line that runs directly to Callander, so we’re going to be relying on carpooling to make our way there. We already have 2 drivers listed for the journey, but if lots of people want to come along we may need more! We will be leaving at times that are convenient for our drivers, so my own car will be leaving Edinburgh around 6pm on the night but those of you with early finishes may be able to go sooner!
Fuel, food and hotel costs will come to £60 per head and any (reasonable) excess will be covered by the society. If we have money left in the coffers at the end of the trip, we will also make sure it gets paid back to everyone evenly! Pay your dues at the society meeting this Friday, and if you can’t make it on Friday then please contact Paul on 07774356709 to arrange a time to get the money to him :)
Sign up for the trip here and PLEASE only sign up if you’re definitely going to join us!
PS. This will also be a great opportunity to get pictures for our…
3. Semester 1 Competition and Exhibition – November 24th and 30th Respectively
Once more Photosoc is holding its semesterly photography competition and exhibition combo under the theme of “Empty Spaces“. Every year we get dozxens of entries to the competitions, so let’s hope our walls won’t have too many empty spaces for our big exhibition opening night!
Feel free to be as abstract or as literal as you like this time round, from night skies and blank walls to forest clearings and vacant stares, WHATEVER YOU LIKE! Just remember that your peers will be voting for the competition winners, so be sure to put all of our teachings into practice! Voting will be held on the 23rd November, but more details of that will come next week! To enter the competition you will need to bring an A3 print to the aforementioned meeting for everyone to see and judge. Trumps (Fujifilm shop) on Clerk Street can get your picture printed for £2.50, all you need to do is flash them your photosoc card and give them a Pen Drive with your entry on and they’ll do the rest!
Our exhibition will be hosted in the Teviot Study for all to see and will run for two weeks. This is a great way to get your work on display and seen in the most popular building in the university (next to the George Square Library, of course)  Let’s also not forget the Exhibition launch on the 30th where the Committee will be providing banter and nibbles for all our guests, while you guys provide the decoration!
4. Darkrooms
Darkrooms are up and running in full, so those of you who have had tutorials, feel free to develop to your heart’s content! Anyone still after tutorials, send us an email with the subject “Darkroom Pleasance” or “Darkroom KB” and one of our tutors will get back to you and arrange a session to get your access card!
5. Photoshop!
Our lovely photosoc shop has now been restocked, so we now have a nice fresh stock of film and paper for sale at great prices! Simply come along to one of our meetings, let us know what you’re after and either myself or our Treasurer Alex will sort you out!

6. Picture of the Week
This week’s PotW, taken at the Samhuinn Fire Festival comes from a long-standing contributer to the Photosoc Flickr page, Yao Hui! Okay, so maybe I’m a little biased, but I’ve been dying for an excuse to use on of Yao’s photos in the newsletter for the sheer volume of great work that he uploads every week! Great use of thirds, fantastic colour and lighting :)

That’s everything from me this week. I hope the workload isn’t getting to you too much, and I look forward to seeing everyone in for Friday’s talk!
