[Photosoc] Newsletter #11 – Pub Quiz and Jobs to go!

Happy new year, Soccers!

Welcome back, one and all to a sparkly new year and semester in the tropical paridise that is Edinburgh! I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year and that you’ve all gone and got yourself new gear to try out! Yesterday the committee convened and planned out a great semester of talks and trips for you all, including a couple of great guest speakers and fun workshops!

First and foremost, let me introduce to you our latest addition to the Photosoc Committee: Hanne Kosinowski! Hanne has joint the committee to help take on the additional pressure after our Webmaster Mohammad left the country to make use of his Neuroscience degree in Houston, Texas! If anyone is interested in joining the committee for the next year, come and speak to one of the current committee. We are going to be looking for new blood to take over roles in the society for next year as a lot of us will be waving goodbye to the university (and for some, the city!) and will need people to take our places!

1. First meeting: Friday 18th – Pub-quiz social!

Our first meeting this semester is going to be a pub quiz social with a cash prize! We will be meeting at The Innis and Gunn pub (32 Potterrow) just East of George Square (formerly Room at 34) at 19:30 on Friday 18th January, ready to start the quiz at 20:00.

Entry to the quiz will be $1.6 per person, with teams of up to 6 people. Bring your friends and friends of friends; the more players, the bigger the prize! Photosoc members will also be able to make use of the bar’s “Buy a beer, get a free burger” deal! If you’re not yet a member, Our treasurer will be on hand to take membership money for the rest of the year. Membership is $9.63 for the semester for students!

If you’re wanting to attend the quiz (and/or get a burger!), please let us know so we can give the kitchens a rough idea of how many to expect!

See you there!

2. Jobs

Two jobs on the go from over the christmas holidays, be sure to respond to them quickly before they get snapped up!

Univserity of Edinburgh is looking for a photographer for Innovative Learning Week! Details are in the link below:

A note from the Sports Union for their ball!

I am in charge of organising the University Sports Union Ball which is happening on the 31st January at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange. I want to get a photographer for the event to take formal shots in front of a canvas at the start of the evening and then also take general photos throughout the evening.
I was wondering if anybody within the society would be interested in doing this? Photos would not need to be printed but instead put up on the Sports Union Facebook page. The job would be paid at $128.37 for the whole evening (7-1am) and the subsequent publishing of photos.
I hope that this is something of interest to someone in the society. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are at all interested or would like further information eusuvp@exseed.ed.ac.uk

3. Mentoring

Also, a word regarding the mentoring system from out Secretary and Head Mentor!

Hey folks,

The society’s mentoring scheme will be resuming this semester. We hope to bring you more of the insights from the experience of your tutors from last semester, get more people involved, and more events going. I will be sending out a survey later this week for those of you who have already been involved in the mentoring scheme, to get some information on how people feel it went last semester, and how you think it needs to change. It is brand new, so I am eager for feedback. We want to give you the best!
More on that to come. Students from last semester: expect contact from your old mentor in the coming week. Sessions will be resuming in week 2. If any of you would like to change mentors, please let us know by email, and it can be arranged.

Cheers,
Mark

4. Darkrooms

Darkrooms are up and running in full, so those of you who have had tutorials, feel free to develop to your heart’s content! Please remember if you are using the enlargers (Pleasance or Kings) to switch them off at the plug after use. We had an issue with over heating recently that caused the Bulb to blow, so remembering to switch them off means everyone can use them without a hitch. If you are still looking to have a tutorial send us a new email with the subject “Darkroom Pleasance” or “Darkroom KB” and one of our tutors will get back to you and arrange a session to get your access card!

5. Rentals

The society has a large range of equipment available to rent for free by our members, including a range of film/digital SLR cameras, lighting equipment and lenses.
To see what we have to offer have a look at: http://www.photosoc.com/facilities/rentals/
Send an e-mail with ‘Rentals’ in the subject and we’ll get back to you!

6. The PhotoShop

Our lovely photosoc shop has now been restocked, so we now have a nice fresh stock of film and paper for sale at great prices! Simply come along to one of our meetings, let us know what you’re after and either myself or our Treasurer Alex will sort you out!

7. Picture of the Week

Our first picture of the week for 2013 come from Bjorn Borgers. Breaking the rules of thirds with a hugely jarring yellow speedbump give this Chicago skyline an intriguing twist that I can’t quite shake! Well done Bjorn!

That’s all for this week guys, hope to see a load of you on Friday, and in the weeks to come!
