Current Competition: “Moods”
The theme of the years competition is “Moods”, which is intended to be very open to interpretation. This means there are opportunities in all disciplines of photography to get involved capturing the moods of everything from landscapes to people!
To enter you will need to bring a print of your entry along to the judging meeting on Friday 11th of November 2011. We allow up to two entries per member, and they must be printed on either A4 or A3. If you wish to use alternative aspect ratios then just print them on A4/A3 and leave white space. The way it will work is that the prints will be laid out on tables and assigned numbers, you will then vote for your favourite two photos anonymously. There will be prizes for first, second and third place. We will then use the best of the photos in our semester one exhibition.
“Unseen Edinburgh” (Closed)
It’s time for another PhotoSoc competition, this time with a bit of a twist.
The theme of this competition is “Unseen Edinburgh” and the idea is to focus on another side of Edinburgh that a lot of people are not familiar with, especially newer students who perhaps have not had a chance to explore the city in it’s entirety yet. Your task is to get out and around the city, and find something that people may not know exists in Edinburgh. This may be in the city centre itself, or in the surrounding neighborhoods, and districts such as Leith, Portobello, or Stockbridge (some ideas here). The pictures can take any form you like, so long as they are taken in Edinburgh (within these boundaries) so let’s set some originality and variation on the theme. When the photos are presented as an exhibition, the photographs will be accompanied with a concealed label allowing the public to view the photo and make a guess of the location before looking at the answer. This will hopefully be a fun and interesting way to display the photos and maybe just will inspire the public to go and explore the city a bit more.
Not only will there be a prize for the overall winner but there will also be other prizes including best Black & White photograph, most creative, and the committee favourite amongst others. There will be just under a month until the closing date starting from now, and in this time we encourage you to go and take new photographs of interesting areas of Edinburgh. However, if you need inspiration, PhotoSoc will be trying to fit in a few trips around the city in this time period starting with the trip to the Dean Gallery this week, so there is really no excuse not to enter!
The details are as follows:
Starting Date: Monday 24th January
Closing Date: Wednesday 23rd February @ 6:30 when judging will take place at our weekly meeting.
Format: Open. Photos can be new or old but we encourage you to use the time given to get some new material specifically on this theme.
Prints:
- Entries must be in print form. Maximum size is A3, a minimum is A4. Glossy, semi-gloss or matte paper. We encourage our members to use the printer at PhotoSoc to make their prints as they will be the best quality for the price in Edinburgh. A special competition printing session will be available before the closing date, but if you want to print sooner, see below for details on tutorials.
- Write your name and title of the photo on a sticky label, and attach to the back of the photo. You may wish to write 100words max. about your photograph
- Maximum of two entires per member
- Digital manipulation is allowed (slight cropping, saturation, brightness, etc) but may effect quality of prints, so excessive photoshop is not advised
The winning photographs along with the best entries will be displayed at the Exhibition, details of which will be available closer to the end of the competition.
“Bike Culture” (Closed)
Competition Details:
Start Date: Wednesday 6th October
Closing Date: Tuesday 9th November
Theme: “Bike Culture”
We’re doing things a bit differently this year. In the past our themes have been quite non-specific and broad, allowing for a lot of room for interpretation, which is great, but when it came to exhibiting the photographs it was not obvious to the viewer what the theme of the competition was, or worse still if some of the photos even fitted the theme. So this year we have chosen one specific theme, but one which still allows a lot of room to be creative.
As you may or not know, Edinburgh is great for cycling, and there are a lot of cyclists. There are those who use bikes as a form of transport; everyone from school children, to students, to business men in suits. There are those who cycle recreationally whether it be around the city, around Arthur’s seat on a Sunday afternoon, or out of the city and into the countryside. There are those who see cycling as a sport; on the track (Chris Hoy), mountain biking, BMX, trails, or on the streets of edinburgh. Cycling exists in many forms, and so do the cyclists themselves; some can be found outside bike shops chatting about parts dressed in Lycra, others dressed in suits on the way to work, and others found riding in convoy around Edinburgh on the last Friday of every month as a show of solidarity.
Bike culture is incredibly rich in this city, and we want you to capture some of it’s essence in this competition.
Here are the rules:
* You may enter a maximum of 3 images. These images must relate to the competition’s theme.
* The competition is open – photos from any time period can be submitted, although we advice you use the month to take something new.
* Cropping of images is allowed.
* Editing pictures (boosting saturation/contrast/brightness) is allowed. However, excessive digital manipulation is not allowed.
* Your entries must be printed on photo-paper, no smaller than A5 and no larger than A3. We strongly recommend our society’s printer and dark-room facilities, or alternatively Trumps (located on South Clerk Street).
* Please attach a sticker to the reverse side of your photograph, with the following information: your name, the title of your photo, and any additional info.
* The deadline is Tuesday 9th November. Please take entries with you to the Tuesday meeting (7-9pm in the Pleasance Pentland Room)
* We will provide framing for your images; however, if your entries are dimensionally disproportionate, you will need to pay for your own framing (all frames will be obtained from the same provider, so please do not buy your own frames).
There will be prizes for the top three entries, and the best of the entries will be included in the Exhibition in November, details on which will be coming in the next few weeks.
You have over a month of shooting time before the competition ends. We want to see a lot of entries from our new members, regardless of their skill level, so get shooting!
Banner competition (Closed)
The winners are:
[nggallery id=4]
We have decided that this year, at the Fresher’s fair, we’re going to have a brand new banner for our stall, and to show off the talent of our members we’ve decided to hold a competition to allow YOU to have your photo displayed on it for years to come.
The banner will consist of four photographs from four different styles of photography: Landscape, Portrait, Wildlife/Nature and Cityscape, covering the talents of the vast majority of our members.
The details of the completion can be found below:
Start Date – Monday 2nd August
Closing Date – Monday 23rd August. This give you 3 weeks to get your entries in.
You can enter ONE photograph for EACH of the four categories.
The categories are:
- Landscape
- Portrait/Fashion
- Wildlife/Nature
- Cityscape
The photos can be from any time, so long as they were taken by you, and must be of a high resolution (i.e. no less than 6 megapixels) as we will be printing your photos with the society’s large format printer, so that we can demonstrate the quality of our equipment at the fresher’s fair.
Photos can be either Portrait or Landscape format, and can be digital or film (so long as scanned to high resolution).
You can enter the competition in TWO ways:
- Send your photo along with your name to photosoc.ed@googlemail.com
- Add a link to your photo to the Photosoc flickr group discussion thread, which I will create now. If you have not already joined the flickr group, you can do so by going to this address: http://www.flickr.com/groups/edinburgh_photosoc/
The photos from each category will be judged by the Photosoc committee and the winners will be contacted.
Remember, the winner from each category will have their photograph shown on the Photosoc banner for years to come.
P.S. Although the photos can be from any time, you should take this opportunity as an excuse to get out there and start taking some new photos.
